Dr. Hotz is a research professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She is a nationally recognized behavioral neuroscientist, expert in pediatric and adult neurotrauma, and leading authority on concussion prevention management.
She has been the director of the UHealth Concussion Program since 1995 and director of the KiDZ Neuroscience Center since 2001. Under her leadership, the Center strives to improve safety awareness through innovative research, education, and community outreach.
Dr. Solano is a Miami-based pediatrician specializing in pediatric critical care medicine.
Dr. Solano currently serves as an Associate Professor at the Miller School of Medicine and is a Pediatric Intensivist at Holtz Children’s Hospital. His clinical experience encompasses concussion, sepsis, shock, pediatric traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injuries. His research contributions include several publications in the fields of spinal cord injury repair and pediatric traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Roberts obtained his MD medical school at the University of Queensland, Australia, before moving to the United States to complete his internship and neurology residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
Following residency he completed a fellowship in Sport Neurology through the University of Michigan. Subsequently he completed the Neuromuscular fellowship through the University of Miami. Dr. Roberts provides care for patients with neuromuscular disorders and is the medical director for the UConcussion Program.
He has a special interest in electrodiagnostic studies, and the evaluation and management of peripheral nerve injuries.
Dr. Michael Hoffer is a Professor of Otolaryngology and Neurological Surgery at the University of Miami. Dr. Hoffer assumed these roles after a military career of over 20 years, in which he studied mild Traumatic Brain Injury (mTBI) on active duty service members.
Dr. Hoffer’s lab focuses on traumatic damage to the inner ear and brain. He is authored over seventy papers and several textbooks and has a particular expertise in hearing disorders, balance disorders, and dizziness as well as neurosensory consequences after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
Dr. Hoffer graduated from Stanford University and UCSD Medical School, was a resident at the University of Pennsylvania, and did a Neurotology Fellowship at the Ear Research Foundation.
Dr. Slugh is a clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in the evaluation of traumatic brain injuries. He also utilizes cognitive rehabilitation techniques for treatment of concussion.
He is one of our doctors at the UConcussion Clinic and – in his function at the program – also provides education to athletic trainers and directors about brain health and preventative measures.
Dr. Coto is a pediatric psychologist who specializes in concussion and pediatric health and developmental disorders. She provides consultation services as well as neuropsychological evaluations.
Her research and clinical training has focused on evaluating the effects of chronic conditions, including TBI, hearing loss, and obesity on children’s cognitive, social, and behavioral development.
Dr. Witte is a former competitive triathlete, cyclist, and co-founder of the BikeSafe Program with Dr. Hotz.
In 2013, she founded a grass-roots, citizen-led coalition called the Aaron Cohen Road Safety Initiative, successfully closing a legal loophole previously used by hit-and-run drivers to avoid jail time.
After a hiatus from the program to pursue teaching, she is once again manager of BikeSafe and a continued champion for “complete streets.”
Elizabeth is the WalkSafe Program Manager and a Miami native who grew up seeing the importance and need for safe walkable spaces in the county. She studied Biological Science and received a Master of Public Health in Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at Florida International University, where she also assisted on a project with the CDC and the Florida Department of Health. She has also been a substitute teacher with Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
At WalkSafe, she coordinates educational and advocacy efforts, giving presentations, planning events – including Walk to School Day – and ensures the curriculum is being implemented across the county. Outside of work, she spends her time enjoying the Miami weather and reading with her dogs.
Dr. Sinnott completed his Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Pittsburgh and has over a decade of clinical research experience on concussion recovery. His research emphasizes neurocognitive and somatosensory function in post-concussion recovery and improving return-to-play protocols.
Before Miami, he was a postdoctoral associate at UNC Chapel Hill, working on a multisite study of head impact biomechanics. A first-generation college graduate, Dr. Sinnott is enthusiastic about mentoring students who share his background and dedication to self-improvement through academia.
Dr. Greenberg is currently the North America Chair for the International Sport and Culture Association and former District Director of Physical Education and Health Literacy for Miami-Dade County Public Schools. She has previously worked for the US Department of HHS and was a Presidential Appointee serving on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition. She has been named as an Aspen Institute Scholar and was inducted into the SHAPE America Hall of Fame.
She has published 5 books and several articles and has secured and managed over $34 million in grants. Dr. Greenberg presently serves as the Youth Movement Ambassador for the Life Time Foundation, and Educational Advocacy and Policy Specialist for the KiDZ Center.
As a communications and multimedia professional for WalkSafe and BikeSafe, Kurt bridges the gap between road engineers, urban planners, and the public through innovative multimedia promotion of safe streets. He is also a web developer, videographer, and the digital artist behind the 3D images used on our websites and educational materials.
Kurt supports equitable cycling through protected bike lane networks and aims to inspire families to become engaged in their community through BikeSafe’s Bike Lane to School pop-up program and videos such as Protected Bike Lanes & More.
As a hobby, he collects vintage bicycles and automobiles, and has founded The Headbadge: A Vintage Bicycle Resource, the Bike Share Museum, and co-founded BondMustang.com.
Claudia received her Bachelor of Science degree in Ecosystem Science and Policy from the University of Miami and comes to us with prior experience as an environmental consultant for Metric Engineering. She leads a research project that hopes to decrease transportation related injuries in underserved communities.
Claudia believes access outdoors is important for connecting with the natural environment and our community and that every person should have the ability to move safely around their community regardless of physical abilities or economic standing.
Gema is a Clinical Business Operations Representative Specialist (CBOR) with over 10 years of experience at the University of Miami.
She has worked with the UConcussion team for the past six years, overseeing day-to-day operations of the Concussion Clinic, assisting and coordinating both patients and staff. Gema also leads program outreach and advancement efforts, building our program’s community partnerships and promoting the clinic’s services within the community.
Ten years ago, Caroline’s experience in the UHealth Concussion Clinic sparked an interest in neuroscience and inspired her to pursue a career in medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degrees in Neuroscience and Ancient History from the University of Texas at Austin and her Master’s in Neuroscience at Georgetown University.
She spent the past year conducting research on the use of transcranial electrical stimulation to restore cognitive function following brain injury. She is honored to return to UM as this year’s research fellow, working alongside the team that once helped her.
